Ask an AI tool for a brand system and it’ll churn one out, no questions asked. Colour, type, components, states, all generated faster than any team could hope to build. But ask your AI of choice why that system is right for your brand and not the next, and it’s stumped. That’s where the race to the middle starts.
A brand system is a set of decisions long before it becomes a set of files. What the brand stands for, who it’s for, which of a hundred coherent directions is worth committing to. A tool can’t make those calls, and they’re the messy bits that actually hold everything else together. Now that the making is cheap, we watch companies across tech skip the deciding altogether.
That was the topic at A Common Thread, our creative breakfast co-hosted with Figma. Give away the thinking, and you only get faster at making forgettable work.
Three speakers came at it from different angles. Ken Vreman from Figma showed what Weave opens up, and that the value of any tool is what you learn to do with it once you stop using it the obvious way. Our very own Walewijn den Boer walked everyone through the Verve POV: direction first, with Weave doing its best work once there’s a clear vision to build out. Rotterdam-based artist Koen Taselaar, who weaves by hand, made the oldest version of the argument. His woven pieces are hours of technique and small decisions, each one shaping the next.
That’s how we build brand systems now. The tool is not the strategy. Weave is the fastest way we’ve found to turn a decided direction into a system that scales, and it earns that speed only after the thinking is done. Decide what the brand is. Then let the tool build it out and show you where it bends.
The tools have never been faster. Knowing which threads to pull is still the job.
We build brand systems by thinking them through first. Let’s talk about yours.
